Monarchs are in danger. They are currently on the red list and need help. If you’ve been curious about monarch conservation, this program is for you. Over the past 8+ years, local artist and Maine Master Naturalist, Rebekah Lowell, has rescued, tagged, and released over 1,800 monarchs from local hayfields and at-risk habitat.* She shares this work on instagram (@rebekahlowell) and in her newsletter, as well as with friends and family who like to stop by and check on the project. And now she’s sharing about her work with others through programs like this one. Learn about how she spends hours a day finding, collecting, raising, tagging, and releasing hundreds of monarchs a season in a homemade conservatory she and her father built last summer.

Artist, author, and Maine Master Naturalist Rebekah Lowell is returning to TML for a brand new creative workshop! Nature Journaling is a practice that can help us see the natural world around us more clearly; a Perpetual Journal is one where you draw one natural object a week over 52 page spreads, and start over year after year until the book is full. Paying close attention in a Perpetual Journal helps us notice the phenology of changing seasons through observing details such as buds forming, flowers blooming, snow melting, bugs in our yard and more. By the end of five years, your journal will be full with the phenology around you and serve as a record of your natural observations over time.

Novels in verse are stories told through free verse poetry. Instead of chapters, the narrative is shared though many poems that string together as a whole, but stand alone as their own poems. In this workshop, we will explore the craft of writing a novel in verse as Rebekah Lowell breaks down what worked for her while drafting and revising her novel in verse, The Road to After (Nancy Paulsen/Penguin). We’ll cover image systems, metaphor, form, structure, voice, point of view, and style. Rebekah will even give a short tour of Scrivener, the program she loves to draft in, and share a recommended reading list because if you want to write, you have to read. A lot. Illustration is an art form with an ancestral home in Maine. We have a rich legacy of attracting notable illustrators to our state such as Dahlov Ipcar, Ashley Bryan, Barbara Cooney, NC Wyeth, Rockwell Kent, and Francis Hamabe. Fortunately, this legacy continues. In fact, we’d like to make the case that we’re currently living in a Golden Age of Illustration in Maine. Curators of this show at Illustration Institute believe that there are more illustrators living in our state, either year round or seasonally, than in any other time in history. We heartily believe this is something to celebrate! Come explore the published work of over 80 historic and contemporary illustrators – old friends and new talent!

Join Center for Wildlife for our annual Holiday Bazaar Markers Market featuring a variety of our favorite local artisans! Our Holiday Bazaar is a great opportunity to meet and chat with local artists, shop local hand-made items and meet Center for Wildlife ambassador animals. During our Holiday Bazaar we will have refreshments, wildlife meet and greets and pictures with Santa. Tickets are required for all attendees.

Join Center for Wildlife and author/artist Rebekah Lowell for an immersive Nature Journaling experience here at Center for Wildlife in which we will explore our wild surroundings and learn to appreciate the sights, sounds and smells of the natural world around us!
There will be three sessions: April 7, April 21, May 5.
Hosted by Project WILD and the Federal Junior Duck Stamp program, this hour-long webinar will help elementary level educators integrate nature sketching into their school curriculum, home school curriculum, or nonformal learning program. In this hands-on session, participants will practice illustrating objects from nature. Participants should join the meeting with paper, pencils, an eraser and colored pencils. A set of watercolor paints is optional.
